Dubai Standing by with Ship Supply Deliveries amidst the Vessel Rerouting

Rerouting of container ships via the Cape of Good Hope results in a high number of reconfigurations of port calls, vessels and transit times, impacting also the supply services in the ports along the Far-East Westbound ocean trade lines, including the Port of Dubai.

An increased pressure on infrastructure still has a huge impact on Jebel Ali, Dubai Port, starting to build congestion due to rerouting of container vessels, unexpected delays, higher cargo volumes and increased transit times.

We see fewer port calls in Dubai, but each call is taking longer and is far more complicated,” says Mads Jensen, Sales and Marketing Director, Middle East. Mads adds “At Jebel Ali, the standard waiting time of 1.5 days for larger vessels, to have cargo loaded or discharged and new provisions on board, has increased to 2.5 to 3 days in May 2024, but we are constantly standing by to secure the deliveries of provisions – picked and planned extra carefully to minimize any further delays.”

The prolonged transit times due to rerouting around the South African coast is part of the reason, however also the recent flooding in Dubai has added to the delays due to an unforeseen pressure on port infrastructure.

Rerouting also has service and supply implications for vessels calling Dubai Port. “We are in very close contact with our customers in order for us to plan and prepare for ship supply deliveries well in advance to minimize delays and disruptions. In our new warehouse facilities, we have the space to store more fresh provisions in the temperature they need so the quality won’t be jeopardized despite prolonged transit times and delays,” ensures Mads Jensen.
